The External Attachment Storage provides a practical solution for managing document storage in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central by offloading files to external systems such as Azure Blob Storage or SharePoint. It is designed to help users maintain system performance, database capacity and attachment security. From the user's point of view, working with attachments remains unchanged. Users continue to add, view, and manage documents directly from Business Central records - whether it's a vendor card, purchase order, or invoice. The extension operates in the background, automatically handling where and how documents are stored. You don’t need to worry about whether a file is saved in Business Central, SharePoint, or Azure Blob Storage; access is seamless and consistent across all records.

When user attaches a document, the system uses predefined rules to decide where it should go and how long it should stay in Business Central before being moved. For example, some documents might be retained for a few days before being offloaded to external storage, while others are moved immediately. The extension also avoids duplicating files - if a document is already linked to a vendor, it will automatically appear on related transactions like purchase orders or invoices, saving space and keeping everything organized.
